Colin Farrell got a real-time lesson in broadcast standards this week when he learned, mid-rant, that he wasn’t exactly whispering.
The Oscar nominee was serving up commentary on FIFA World Cup on FOX After Hours with James Corden when he unleashed a string of colorful language aimed at a wax figure lurking in the studio, unaware that any of it was making it to air unfiltered.
“Who the f–k is that?” Farrell asked, gawking at the mystery statue, according to a compilation Fox Sports shared on Instagram, with the network dutifully bleeping the audio for the clip.
The problem is there was no bleep happening in the moment. Corden, back on American television years after walking away from The Late Late Show, had to step in and break the news to his guest.
“Let me tell you two things,” Corden told Farrell. “Number one, that’s the waxwork Pelé from Madame Tussauds, and number two, this is live.”
Farrell’s face did most of the talking after that. He paused, looking genuinely rattled, before admitting the F-bombs had been flying with zero awareness they were airing live.
“I didn’t know that,” Farrell said, repeating himself for emphasis. “I didn’t know that!”
He didn’t stop there, either, walking through his own logic in real time as the panel and studio audience erupted in laughter. “It mightn’t’ve been that different, but I didn’t know that,” he added. “I would’ve liked to have known that.”
Farrell even tried to figure out how he’d missed the memo in the first place, pointing to the show’s title as his defense. “Wait a minute, it’s called ‘Live,'” he started, before catching his own mistake. “No it’s not, it’s called After Hours!”
The mixup makes some sense given the show’s title doesn’t include the word “live” anywhere, a detail that apparently threw Farrell off completely while he was busy critiquing a wax Pelé.
It’s not the first time Farrell has been caught off guard by a hot mic. Back in September, the actor dropped an F-bomb while promoting A Big Bold Beautiful Journey alongside Margot Robbie on Today, blurting out “I f–king knew it” after correctly guessing a chip brand, only to backpedal with, “They misheard me!”
Whether or not the FIFA World Cup slip changes how producers brief him before his next live hit remains to be seen. For now, Farrell has given both soccer fans and F-bomb enthusiasts something to talk about.
Farrell next returns to the big screen as The Penguin in The Batman: Part II, a role that, notably, will not require him to worry about live microphones.
