Roswell native Demi Moore has broken her silence about growing up in America’s most famous UFO hotspot, telling Stephen Colbert that when it comes to the legendary 1947 incident, “something definitely happened.”
During a recent appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert promoting her role in the series Landman, the Oscar-nominated actress shared surprising insights about life in the New Mexico town synonymous with alien conspiracy theories. The conversation took an otherworldly turn when Moore revealed her daughters often joke that she might be “part alien” herself.
“I don’t know, maybe it’s just because I was born in Roswell,” Moore quipped about why Tallulah, Rumer, and Scout tease her about extraterrestrial origins.

The 62-year-old star then dropped a bombshell about the infamous Roswell crash site incident. “Something definitely happened,” she stated firmly. However, Moore noted that during her childhood in the town, the topic was completely taboo. “When I was a kid, it was never spoken about. Never. It just was not ever ever talked about, not even in passing. It was as if it was a secret.”
The Roswell Incident refers to the 1947 event when debris from a crashed military balloon was recovered near the town, sparking decades of speculation about UFOs and alien spacecraft. The U.S. military initially announced they had recovered a “flying disc” before quickly changing the story to a weather balloon.

Moore explained how the town’s relationship with its UFO legacy transformed over time. After Hollywood arrived with documentaries and the popular television series Roswell, everything changed. “There was a museum, and now there’s a somewhat comprehensive museum discussing how they shut all communication down about it,” she told Colbert.
When pressed to elaborate on what she believes actually happened at the crash site, Moore offered a measured response. “Well, you know, the largest landing strip in America is in Roswell, so there’s a lot of testing that goes on,” she said, hinting at possible military explanations while keeping her cards close to her chest.
The actress is now channeling her fascination with extraterrestrial phenomena into her upcoming film Strange Arrivals, where she’ll portray Betty Hill in the true story of Betty and Barney Hill’s alleged alien abduction. Colman Domingo will co-star as Barney Hill in the project.
Today, Roswell fully embraces its alien identity with attractions like the International UFO Museum and an annual UFO Festival, drawing thousands of visitors curious about what really happened in the New Mexico desert all those years ago.
