Actor Henry Cavill recently expressed his thoughts on sex scenes in an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast. While chatting with host Josh Horowitz and Argylle director Matthew Vaughn, Cavill revealed that he dislikes sex scenes in movies. Vaughn agreed, saying that he didn't understand them. Cavill went on to explain that he thinks sex scenes can be beneficial to a film, but they're often overused these days.
I also don’t understand them. I’m not a fan.
The actor explained that he thinks sex scenes can be great for storytelling, but they should only be used when necessary. “I think sometimes they’re overused these days. It’s when you have a sense that you’re going ‘Is this really necessary? Or is it just people with less clothing on?’ and that’s where you start to get more uncomfortable and you’re thinking ‘There’s not a performance here, there’s not a piece which is gonna carry through into the rest of the movie.’”
It's worth noting that while some people might feel that sex scenes are more common now than in the past, data from Kate Hagen analyzing IMDb statistics suggests otherwise. According to her research, only 1.21% of almost 150,000 feature films since 2010 actually contain depictions of on-screen sex, which is the lowest percentage since the 1960s.
Vaughn, who directed the Kingsman films, expressed his confusion about sex scenes during the interview. He admitted that he doesn't understand how actors can perform intimate scenes on camera. While he doesn't direct sex scenes himself, his movies do contain explicit content. However, his latest film, Argylle, is rated PG-13 and contains no sex scenes.
Overall, Cavill's perspective on sex scenes is that they should only be used when necessary and add to the overall narrative. While he acknowledges that they can be great for storytelling, he believes they're often overused in movies and TV shows.
Argylle is rated PG-13 and contains no sex scenes, and is now playing in theaters. Watch the full interview above.
