Smith Jerrod is gone. In his place is a 54-year-old former supermodel waking up before dawn in Central America to build an entire fantasy universe from scratch.
After leaving Los Angeles, Jason Lewis — the actor and former male supermodel best known for playing Samantha Jones’s devoted younger boyfriend on Sex and the City — now wakes at 4 a.m. each day to build an ambitious universe exploring power, tyranny, and self-worth. Not exactly what you’d expect from the guy who once graced every magazine cover in the late ’90s.
Three years ago, he moved from California to Costa Rica, where he now spends his days surfing, learning Spanish, and working on a sprawling fantasy epic book series that has quietly consumed years of his life.
And we’re not talking about one book.
Jason moved from California to Costa Rica, where he is working on a fantasy book series made up of nine novels. Three interconnected trilogies set across different eras in the same universe, all exploring themes of power, agency, tyranny, and redemption.
As for the genre, Lewis is putting all the Twilight comparisons to bed before they even start. “Closer to Lord of the Rings. It’s epic fantasy. It’s my own magic system based more in physics than the soft magic of casting spells and stuff like that,” he explained in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
The series has been growing in scope for a long time. “I’d been working on it for quite a while and I found myself at a point where I knew it was large when I started, but it just kept expanding and growing into this bigger and bigger world as I plotted it and figured it out.”
So what made him finally pack up and leave L.A. for good? “I literally sat down with pen and paper and did kind of a ‘what do I need, what do I want’ design-of-life list,” he said of his decision to move and write his novels.
Costa Rica checked every box. “Certainly at the top of the list was the space to do this because this is me on a journey of discovery as much as anything. I’ve never written novels before this, so I don’t have a bunch of feathers in my cap to lean on. I wanted a healthy lifestyle and access to good food. I surf, and being right next to a beach is very easy motivation for me to stay healthy.”
And if you’re wondering why this whole thing has stayed so under the radar — well, that kind of tracks for Lewis.
He was not asked back to appear in And Just Like That… and seemed perfectly happy with that turn of events. “As much as I appreciate the flattery, the conversation is about the girls,” he said at the time.
Here’s where it gets genuinely interesting for fantasy nerds: Jason revealed he’s currently on Book 7, and it’s the first one he’s writing. “I’m on the fourth draft of it. Well, 3.5. The first draft is really just a 150-page summary,” he explained. “The idea is to start with the release of seven. Truth be told, I think it started because of being a fan of Star Wars and other stuff where I thought, ‘Oh yeah, let’s just do this in reverse.'”
But this isn’t just a cool structural trick — it’s a thematic choice. “The first trilogy is an idealistic tale. The middle one is when good intentions go terrible, when you become the monster so the monster can’t hurt you. And the last one is more of a redemption story.”
And yes, the physics obsession is real. Lewis has no formal background in physics, but says he’s always been curious — paying attention to quantum theory over the years and drawing inspiration from Richard Feynman’s theory that all of reality is just a single electron moving through spacetime.
He’s also been a storytelling kid at heart all along. “I was always a geek for storytelling,” he revealed. “I would hide in libraries and movie theatres growing up; I’d steal change from my mom’s purse to go to the movies because you could go for change back then.”
The writing life in Costa Rica is clearly suiting him. The supermodel abs, the SATC fame, the Hollywood machinery — all of it is apparently a lot easier to leave behind when you’ve got three trilogies to finish and a wave to catch at sunrise.
