Months after nearly being killed in a snowplow accident, Avengers star Jeremy Renner triumphantly walked the premiere red carpet of his Disney+ series Rennervations Tuesday (Apr. 11, 2023). Using a cane for support, Renner even stopped to meet well-wishing fans.
Inside the Regency Village Theater, Renner rode a motorized scooter to the stage for a discussion with late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, receiving a standing ovation from the audience.
“What's with the scooter? Did something happen?” Kimmel joked as Renner took his seat to discuss the series (which streams its first three episodes Wednesday).
Renner was surrounded by family and supporters at the Rennervations premiere in Los Angeles, where he posed for photos and did interviews, at times making use of a cane and a knee scooter. At one point he flashed photographers a thumbs up sign while moving down the carpet.
Renner was crushed by his 7-ton snowplow on New Year's Day while trying to help free a relative's car at his Nevada home. The actor has said he broke numerous bones and suffered a collapsed lung and pierced liver in the accident.
Rennervations follows Renner as he transforms large vehicles into community spaces for young people in India, Mexico, Chicago and Nevada. The purposes range from serving as a mobile music studio to a water filtration truck for a community in India.
Renner said his aim was to give young people access to things they might not already have and present opportunities they might not know existed.
Renner wrote the theme song for the show, something he did while working on another show.
Renner said he was determined to keep the Rennervations premiere on track, even as he was recovering from his injuries.
“I was really adamant about them not pushing this thing while there was momentum with the brass at Disney, with us, with the timing of it in all of our lives. It just felt right,” Renner told Variety. “I look a little beat up right now, but I promise you this show is what’s propelling me to get better and makes me want to get better every day. I set out a goal to be walking this carpet. And here I am enjoying it. Otherwise it would have gone to an abyss with no date and lost traction and excitement and I would have been very, very, very frustrated. I’m very excited right now because we’re here.”
