Katy Perry‘s crowd-surfing days may need a rethink.
The singer got stuck inside a giant inflatable water bottle during her headline set at Isle of MTV Malta on July 22, and the internet has not let her live it down since.
Perry, 41, was performing “I Kissed a Girl” at Il-Fosos Square when she climbed into the human-sized prop, nicknamed “Katyade,” expecting fans to roll her across the crowd toward a matching oversized straw near the stage. Instead, concertgoers had other plans, passing the bottle in the opposite direction as she drifted further from where she needed to be.
Video from the show captured Perry pleading with the audience to turn her around. “Go back to the stage!” she was heard shouting, followed by an exasperated “Oh my God!”
Fans eventually got the memo and rolled the “California Gurl” back to finish her number.
Perry addressed the mishap afterward on Isle of MTV Malta’s Instagram, explaining the stunt in her own words. “I basically get in this giant inflatable water bottle and I roll it into the crowd,” she said. “And tonight I went kind of far and I was a little bit worried I was not gonna come back.”
Naturally, the internet had thoughts. One Reddit user riffed on Perry’s own lyrics, cracking, “Do you ever feel like a plastic bag?” Another took it further: “Do you ever feel, like a plastic bottle, drifting through the crowd, wanting to get out?”
Others questioned whether the whole bit should’ve made it to showtime in the first place. “I understand why SHE did it,” one commenter wrote. “I don’t understand how her management, security, and lawyers didn’t veto it.”
This isn’t Perry’s first brush with a stage stunt gone sideways — she previously had a scare when a suspended metal sphere tilted mid-air during her Lifetimes Tour. Compared to that, a rogue water bottle is practically a win.
