Matthew McConaughey hasn't ruled out his political ambitions just yet. On Friday (Jul. 12, 2024), the Oscar-winning actor joined a panel at the National Governors Association, discussing how to foster civility in politics with Utah's Republican Gov. Spencer Cox and Colorado's Democratic Gov. Jared Polis.

Though he remained elusive about his potential party affiliation and specific office plans, McConaughey's interest in politics is clear. In 2022, he hinted at a possible run for Texas governor.

“I've been on a learning tour for probably the last six years,” McConaughey shared with New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, who inquired about his future plans. “Do I have the instincts and intellect that would make it a good fit for me, and would I be good for it? Would I be useful?”

The meeting proved educational for McConaughey. “I learned a lot from you last night through that tequila, sir,” he joked with Murphy, referencing their chat over drinks.

The panel also tackled how politicians need to capture online attention. McConaughey noted that the extreme polarization often seen online has seeped into Hollywood.

“My industry has to watch its tongue right out of the gate because it's coming from the left. We need to start conversations without invalidating moderates or conservatives, which we're sometimes guilty of,” he explained.

Hawaii's Democratic Gov. Josh Green encouraged McConaughey to pursue a political career. “Don't fall into the trap of thinking you have to be just one thing,” Green advised. “Many Republicans will want you to be a Republican, and many Democrats will want you to be a Democrat. Just be you, because that might be something special for all of us.”

Stay tuned to see if McConaughey's political dreams will evolve from a learning tour to a full-fledged campaign.
