Paul Mescal recently praised Saoirse Ronan for perfectly capturing an important truth when she educated him and other male panelists about women's safety concerns during a viral moment on The Graham Norton Show.
The eye-opening exchange from the Oct. 25 episode showed the Lady Bird actress, 30, giving actors Mescal, Denzel Washington, and Eddie Redmayne a reality check about the extra precautions women must take to protect themselves from gender-based violence.
The conversation sparked when Redmayne shared how he learned to use a phone as a self-defense tool while preparing for his role as an assassin in The Day of the Jackal, leading Mescal to dismiss the concept.
“Who's actually going to think about that?” Mescal joked, prompting Ronan to reply, “That's what girls have to think about all the time.”
“Am I right ladies?” she asked as the audience applauded.
During a recent appearance on Ireland's The Late Late Show,“the Gladiator 2 star, 28, voiced his support for Ronan when asked about the widespread attention her candid comment received online.
“No, I don't think we were surprised because, as you said, you're on a talk show like this and you're kind of just talking,” Mescal told host Patrick Kielty. “But I'm not surprised that the message received as much attention that it got because it's massively important.”
Mescal described Ronan's powerful statement as “spot on.”
“But I think she was spot on, hit the nail on the head, and it's also good that messages like that are kind of gaining traction, like that's a conversation that we should absolutely be having on a daily basis,” he added.
The All of Us Strangers actor then shared his admiration for his Foe co-star.
“I'm sure you've had Saoirse on the show,” he told Kielty. “And she's quite often, if more often than not, the most intelligent person in the room.”
