Bob the Drag Queen has a new stand-up comedy special, This is Wild, currently streaming on Hulu – and also has lots to say about Drag Race. Since Bob is known for pulling no punches, some of his opinions on the show’s her-story shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone.
While discussing controversial queens like Sherry Pie and King Tyra, Bob does have some good, valid points. He also shares who he thought was the true villain of season 4 (justice for Phi Phi!) and the comedy queen of season 13 (Bob’s right on this one too) and talks about his disconnection from the local drag scene in NYC and the commodification of drag. Also, if you want some fun, behind-the-scenes tea from the Werk the World tour, Bob’s got ya! (If you want to know what items are on Bob’s tour rider, watching this video will reveal all.)
It’s also a treat to hear Bob call out some of the legends of drag (including some of my personal favorites like Varla Jean Merman, Miss Coco Peru, and Jackie Beat) and has a great suggestion about integrating more “seasoned” queens into the Drag Race mix…which I am totally on board with.) Spend some time with Bob, you won’t regret it.
