Drag is more than beauty, gowns, and crowns, and a new series is making it more about truth, transformation, and triumph.
Pageant Queens: Our Story Behind the Crown, a groundbreaking 12-episode docuseries that redefines what it means to compete, create, and connect through drag. The series, set against the vibrant queer backdrop of Miami, Fort Lauderdale, South Beach, Wilton Manors, and Lauderhill, follows ten legendary national titleholders as they move into a South Florida mansion to prepare for the ultimate crown — “The Queen of Drag” — and a $50,000 cash prize.
Unlike traditional reality competitions, Pageant Queens ditches eliminations for empowerment. The queens collaborate, vote on judges and scoring systems, and even design their own pageant. What unfolds is part strategy, part sisterhood, and wholly authentic, giving viewers a rare glimpse into what life looks like beyond the spotlight.
Among the competitors are some of drag’s most celebrated names: Kennedy Davenport (RuPaul’s Drag Race), Layla Larue, Shae Shae Lareese, A’zsia Dupree, Tonica E. Cavalli, Joan Jullian, Tatiyanna Voche, Tiffany T. Hunter, Alexis Gabrielle Sherrington, and Buff Faye. Collectively, they hold over thirty-eight national titles across systems like Miss Continental, Miss Gay USofA, Entertainer of the Year, and Miss Black Universe — making them the living history of drag pageantry itself.
Set against the vibrant queer backdrop of Miami, Fort Lauderdale, South Beach, Wilton Manors, and Lauderhill, the series chooses to stay rooted in Florida — a bold, creative, and political decision.
The first ten episodes of Pageant Queens: Our Story Behind the Crown begin streaming this fall, with the two-part finale to follow soon after.
