The 2026 Oscar nominations delivered a historic morning for cinema as Ryan Coogler‘s Sinners shattered Academy Awards records Thursday, earning an unprecedented 16 nominations and rewriting Oscar history books.
The announcement marks a watershed moment for the 98th Academy Awards. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voters showered Sinners with more nominations than they had ever bestowed before, breaking the 14-nomination mark set by All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land.
Actors Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman revealed the nominees during an early morning livestream from Los Angeles. The vampire epic’s record-breaking haul includes nods for Best Picture, Best Director for Coogler, and Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan‘s dual role.

Paul Thomas Anderson‘s One Battle After Another followed closely behind with 13 nominations. The revolutionary drama earned multiple acting nominations, with Leonardo DiCaprio receiving a Best Actor nod alongside supporting nods for Teyana Taylor, Benicio Del Toro, and Sean Penn.
The Academy introduced a groundbreaking addition this year. This year, for the first time, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is recognizing casting directors (up to two per film). The last time a competitive category was added was in 2001, with best animated film.
Timothée Chalamet secured a Best Actor nomination for his performance in Marty Supreme, where Timothée Chalamet snagged an acting nomination for his role as the titular character and table tennis player. The Josh Safdie-directed film earned nine total nominations.

Best Picture nominees include Bugonia, F1, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, Sinners, and Train Dreams.
Notable acting performances earned recognition across categories. Jessie Buckley received a Best Actress nomination for Hamnet, while Kate Hudson surprised many with her nod for Song Sung Blue. Delroy Lindo, 73, received his first Oscar nomination for his role in Sinners.
Warner Bros. stands to have its most successful Oscar showing in the studio’s 102-year history. Both Sinners and One Battle After Another represent Warner Bros. titles, positioning the studio for a record haul even as it prepares for its sale to Netflix.

The ceremony will take place March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Conan O’Brien returns as host for the second consecutive year. The show will air live on ABC and Hulu beginning at 7 p.m. ET.
Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor addressed the evolving landscape of filmmaking before the announcement. “We live in a time of limitless technology that enables us to push the boundaries of our cinematic experience and our profound belief is that the heartbeat of film is and will always remain unmistakably human,” she said.
