Today (Oct. 09, 2024), Vogue shared some exciting news: the 2025 Costume Institute show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art will spotlight “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”
This eye-catching exhibit draws inspiration from Monica L Miller’s 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. Miller’s work dives into the fascinating world of the Black dandy.
Vogue tells us the show will feature “garments, paintings, photographs, and more – all exploring the indelible style of Black men in the context of dandyism, from the 18th-century through present day”. It’ll also “illustrate how Black people transformed from being enslaved and stylized as luxury items, acquired like any other signifier of wealth and status, to autonomous self-fashioning individuals who are global trendsetters.”
Before the big reveal, guest curator Miller shared her thoughts on Black dandyism: “a strategy and a tool to rethink identity, to reimagine the self in a different context. To really push a boundary—especially during the time of enslavement, to really push a boundary on who and what counts as human, even.”
It was also announced that A$AP Rocky, Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, and Pharrell Williams will co-chair the Met Gala with the Vogue boss. In addition, LeBron James will be an honorary co-chair.
