Los Angeles (AFP) โ€“ His recent hit film โ€œElvisโ€ is an Oscars frontrunner, but Tom Hanks was left all shook up Monday as he earned three nominations from the Razzies, which โ€œcelebrateโ€ the yearโ€™s worst films.

Hanks was short-listed by the tongue-in-cheek awards for his roles as Presleyโ€™s manager in rock โ€˜nโ€™ roll biopic โ€œElvis,โ€ and Geppetto in Disneyโ€™s critically slated live-action โ€œPinocchioโ€ remake.

A press release from organizers of the Razzies dubbed Hanksโ€™ โ€œElvisโ€ role as โ€œ2022โ€™s most widely derided performance,โ€ and piled on a further nomination for โ€œworst screen coupleโ€ to โ€œTom Hanks & His Latex-Laden Face (and Ludicrous Accent).โ€ย

While โ€œElvisโ€ and its star Austin Butler have generally received acclaim, Hanksโ€™ appearance as his exploitative manager Colonel Tom Parker was panned by many critics.

A New York Times review said Hanks appears โ€œwith a mountain of prosthetic goo, a bizarre accent and a yes-itโ€™s-really-me twinkle in his eyes,โ€ and portrays Parker as โ€œpart small-time grifter, part full-blown Mephistopheles.โ€

โ€œDisneyโ€™s Pinocchioโ€ was among five โ€œworst pictureโ€ nominees for the annual Golden Raspberry โ€” or Razzie โ€” awards, as was the controversial Marilyn Monroe biopic โ€œBlonde.โ€

Also in the running were regular Razzies punching bag Jared Leto, and his Spider-Man spinoff โ€œMorbius.โ€

Just last year, Leto was named worst supporting actor for his flamboyant performance โ€” complete with a campy Italian accent and heavy prosthetics โ€” in โ€œHouse of Gucci.โ€

The Razzies are usually announced the day before the Oscars, serving to mock the following nightโ€™s self-congratulatory Tinseltown back-slapping.

But last year, the Razzies themselves were left embarrassed, after jokingly creating a new category labelled โ€œWorst Performance by Bruce Willis in a 2021 Movieโ€ to accommodate all of the former โ€œDie Hardโ€ starโ€™s questionable output.

Organizers rescinded the prize after his family revealed Willis suffered from a cognitive illness called aphasia.

Nominations for this yearโ€™s Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday.
