The Metropolitan Museum of Art has recently announced that the 2024 Met Gala in May will be co-chaired by a group of renowned individuals, including Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, and Zendaya, along with Vogue’s very own Anna Wintour.
This year's theme for the Met Gala, which benefits the museum's Costume Institute, is “The Garden of Time,” and it marks the opening of the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” The honorary chairs for the gala are Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew.
According to Vogue, each of the co-chairs reflects a variety of career achievements and have distinct style histories with the Met Gala. For instance, Bad Bunny, who attended the affair last year in an unforgettable backless Jacquemus suit, will be ringing in his third year of attendance. Chris Hemsworth, on the other hand, will be attending the gala for the first time. Meanwhile, Jennifer Lopez, who has attended the event 13 times, is a pro at delivering statement looks, and Zendaya, who has been to the Gala five times, has become a consistent fan-favorite on the red carpet.
In addition to the dress code for the Gala, “The Garden of Time,” Vogue suggests taking into consideration the aforementioned exhibition, ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion', which includes pieces that span decades, and will all be displayed in entirely new ways using elements such as AI, GCI, and more, while playing up themes of land, sea, and sky.
The dress code takes inspiration from a 1962 J.G. Ballard short story titled “The Garden of Time,” which tells the tale of Count Axel and his Countess wife who live in a “utopia of leisure, art, and beauty” and reside in a villa overlooking a garden of crystalline flowers with translucent leaves, gleaming glass-like stems, and crystals at the heart of every bloom.
All in all, this year’s Met Gala is set to be an event of grand proportions, as the co-chairs and honorary chairs, well-known figures in their respective fields, will grace the red carpet in their stylish interpretations of the theme “The Garden of Time.”
