Barry Keoghan revealed that his unique bond with his 2-year-old son Brando made it challenging to rely on personal experience when preparing for his role as a father in his new film, Bird.

The Saltburn star welcomed Brando with former girlfriend Alyson Kierans in August 2022. Though the couple parted ways shortly after their son’s birth, Barry remains involved in Brando’s life despite his busy acting career.

Discussing his son, the actor admitted their relationship isn’t typical. He told Entertainment Weekly, “I’ll just say this — I didn’t have a father figure growing up, so even my relationship with my son isn’t quite of the normal father-son relationship.”

He revealed that he lacked real-life experience to draw from when filming the movie Bird. In the drama, Keoghan portrays a single dad to a 12-year-old girl. “I don’t have that figure to draw experience from and to base it on,” Keoghan explained.

He continued, “Love, you don’t need anything to draw from, love is pure, and so I’m not on about that, but I’m on about little stuff like teaching your son this or teaching your daughter that. Going into this, I didn’t have that [normal experience], so it’s a very brother-sister kind of chemistry going on [for Bug and Bailey], which I felt was right for it.”
