Bebe Rexha has taken to social media to voice her frustrations with the music industry, which she claims has “silenced” and “punished” her. The 34-year-old singer posted an impassioned rant on X/Twitter on Tuesday (July 2), stating, “I could bring down a BIG chunk of this industry. I AM frustrated. I Have been UNDERMINED. I’ve been so quiet for the longest time.”
Rexha continued, “I haven’t seen the signs even though people constantly are bringing them up and they have been SO OBVIOUS. And when I have spoken up I’ve been silence and PUNISHED by this industry. Things must change,” suggesting she might reveal “all of my truths. The good the bad and the ugly.”
Responding to a fan's comment about her name being removed from the track “Hey Mama,” Rexha said, “My love. That? Compared to all the other stuff you don’t know about? That’s Child’s play.”
Rexha was featured in David Guetta’s 2015 hit alongside Nicki Minaj and Afrojack but initially wasn't properly credited. After speaking with Guetta and involving her lawyer, she eventually received credit.
When asked by another fan why she hasn't spoken out more, Rexha bluntly said, “THEY PUNISH YOU.”
One X user noted the timing of her posts, coinciding with the promotion of her new single, “I’m The Drama.” Rexha dismissed the idea that it was a marketing strategy, replying, “Marketing? I have no budget for that. IM FED UP.”
Rexha later clarified that her frustration also stems from sadness, sharing, “I’m sitting in my hotel room in London Crying my eyes out. I’ve felt hopeless for the longest time. I’ve been walking a lot through this city and meeting fans and they have really ignited something inside of me. Honestly you all have given me the strength.”
She followed up her series of tweets with a statement this morning (Jul. 03, 2024) saying, “Thank you to everyone checking up on me. I'm working through these issues and fighting for what I deserve. Many news outlets have asked for an interview. If you want to write about me please support my new music. Thank you again. Love you. 🙏🏼”
This isn't the first time Rexha has criticized the industry. In a 2021 interview with The Los Angeles Times, the Grammy-nominated artist called the music industry “the most toxic industry there is.”
Recently, Rexha also had a public spat with former collaborator G-Eazy. She called him a “stuck up ungrateful loser” on Instagram, accusing him of mistreating her after the success of their collaboration.
“@g_eazy you have my number. Why don’t you text me and ask me yourself you stuck up ungrateful loser. You’re lucky people are liking you again,” she wrote over a screenshot of a group chat in which she was asked whether she had any interest in shooting social content with G-Eazy while in New York.
“Cause I could go in on all the s***ty things you’ve done and how you treated me after giving you your only real hit. Btw the answer is no. Hope you good,” Rexha said.
She later deleted the post but reiterated on X that she stands by what she said, explaining that “sometimes trauma can lead us to react that way, and that period of my life was traumatizing.”
