It’s been a rough few weeks for Britney Spears — but it looks like things might finally be moving in a better direction.
TMZ confirmed today that Spears has entered rehab for substance abuse. She checked into an undisclosed facility in the United States a few days ago. Sources with direct knowledge of the situation say people close to the singer had been urging her to go, and she ultimately agreed to do so voluntarily.
As one source put it plainly: “She realizes she hit rock bottom.”
The 44-year-old pop superstar was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in Ventura County on the night of March 4, after a report came in around 8:48 p.m. of a black BMW 430i driving erratically and at high speed on the southbound 101 Freeway. She was pulled over around 9:30 p.m., and she was transported to a nearby hospital so that medical staff could draw blood to determine her blood alcohol content.

She was released from Ventura County jail early Thursday morning and is scheduled to appear in court on May 4.
Her manager, Cade Hudson, wasted no time getting a statement out. “This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life,” Hudson said. He added that “her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being.”
That plan, it turns out, included rehab — though getting Britney on board wasn’t exactly a smooth ride.
Insiders say the original plan was for Spears to enter at least a 30-day alcohol awareness program, if only to demonstrate to the judge overseeing her case that she was taking the matter seriously. But Britney initially pushed back. After some initial resistance, a close friend said, “She now recognizes (treatment) is an opportunity for her to get her life back. And she is now open to getting ahead of the issue, start rebuilding her life and re-examine the choices she has been making over the past few years.”

The friend added: “Trust is something very hard to come by for her but she has come to the conclusion she does need to re-examine her lifestyle (with help).”
Insiders who spoke to Us Weekly described the situation as a crisis that had been building for some time. “This behavior has been going on for months but has been worse recently,” one source said. “She has a lot of alone time at home which leads her to make bad choices like drinking.”
Sources who spoke to Radar Online described Britney as embarrassed and tearful during the arrest, saying, “Britney clearly needs help, and people in her world are saying the best path for her right now is rehab. There’s a feeling this was a cry for help. She was incredibly emotional. It’s been a very hard couple of months.”
That same source made clear that Britney’s habit of downplaying her struggles hasn’t been fooling anyone around her. “She tells people around her there’s nothing to be concerned about. But this incident, as well as so many others, reveal that simply isn’t the case,” the source said.

The DUI arrest also isn’t the only legal motivation here. Sources told TMZ that part of the reason Britney agreed to enter rehab at this point is the pending DUI case. As one source explained, “She knows strategically this will look good in front of the judge — that she’s taking it seriously.”
As for how long she’ll be staying, the program is of indeterminate length — though it’s often 30 days — and in this case, sources say Britney could stay longer for a more meaningful recovery. Her sons and others have been strongly supportive of the move.
Her inner circle has made it clear that the moment calls for serious action. “Her team wants her in rehab or a program to help her get to a better place,” one insider told Us Weekly. “Everyone around her hopes this will be a wake-up call for her.”
Britney has had issues with drugs — in particular, Adderall — and alcohol for years. Back in the day, she went to rehab several times but bailed after a few days. Whether this time is different remains to be seen, but the people closest to her are choosing optimism — even if cautiously.
Her court date is still on the books for May 4.
