Melissa Gilbert has officially broken her silence, and she came out swinging â with love, resolve, and a very clear message.
The actress sat down exclusively with Good Morning America anchor George Stephanopoulos on Monday (April 6, 2026), appearing alongside Busfieldâs civil attorney Larry Stein to directly address her husband Timothy Busfieldâs charges of criminal sexual contact with a minor for the very first time.
The verdict from Gilbert? Her husband is innocent, full stop.
âI am 100 percent he will be exonerated,â she told Stephanopoulos, adding carefully, âbut I will tell you that there is a practical side to this and we have to be prepared for all scenarios.â
Thatâs the kind of steely pragmatism youâd expect from someone whoâs had to sit with this for months.

Gilbert noted that she âwasnât capableâ of speaking out sooner â Busfield turned himself over to police in January, and was officially indicted in February â because âitâs been a very traumatic time.â She said she finally stepped forward because thereâs been too much âuntruthâ surrounding the scandal.
She didnât hold back when describing the toll the ordeal has taken.
âHell,â Gilbert said flatly when asked what the whole episode has been like. âOur life as we knew it is done. We are grieving what we had â all of our plans, all of our dreams, all of our ideas, all of our projects. For Tim, itâs done. Heâs canceled. Even if heâs exonerated, he will always be that guy.â
That last line hits differently. Sheâs not just defending her husband â sheâs eulogizing the life they had before the charges landed.

She added, âAnd believe me, if I thought for a second that Tim Busfield hurt a child, heâd have a lot more to worry about than prison.â Gilbert â best known for playing Laura Ingalls Wilder on Little House on the Prairie â clearly wanted everyone to understand that her support isnât blind loyalty. Itâs bone-deep certainty.
âI know this man in my bones. No one knows him better than I do,â she said. âHe is nothing if not completely honest with me. I trust him with my childrenâs lives, with my grandchildrenâs lives, my nieces and nephews. He is an honorable, caring, generous human being.â
So, what exactly are the charges? The allegations against Busfield stem from accusations that he inappropriately touched a child actor on the set of the TV show The Cleaning Lady, which he was directing and which was filmed in Albuquerque, according to a criminal complaint filed in January 2026.
Busfield â known for his roles as Ethan Weston on thirtysomething and Danny Concannon on The West Wing â was indicted on February 6 by a grand jury in New Mexico on four counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor, and later pleaded not guilty to all four counts.

The defenseâs central argument hinges on what the boys actually said â and when.
Attorney Larry Stein discussed discrepancies between what he says the boys originally told investigators and what was later described in the complaint. âWhat the boys said originally was, âHe never touched me,'â Stein explained. He added that when specifically asked whether Busfield ever touched them inappropriately, âthe boys said no.â
Stephanopoulos pressed back, pointing out that in a subsequent interview, one of the boys did allege inappropriate touching. Busfieldâs legal team has alleged that the parents of the twin child actors blamed him when their sons were recast and âwanted revenge.â
According to court documents, a witness heard the boysâ mother say that âif her children were not brought back, she would get Timothy Busfield.â The district attorneyâs office, for its part, issued a statement saying its focus âremains on the victims.â

Gilbert also addressed questions about past allegations that have surfaced online regarding Busfield. She acknowledged being aware of them when they got together and was deliberate in her response.
âI didnât go into my relationship with him blind. I am neither naive, nor am I complicit,â she said. âI talked to him about it. I asked him questions about it. I heard his side of the story, which no one has ever heard, which is the truth, and when the time is right â and that is not now â Tim will tell the truth of all of these past allegations when he needs to.â
Busfieldâs trial is currently set for May 2027 in New Mexico. For Gilbert, thatâs a long time to wait â and she knows it. She said she hopes for both an apology and an exoneration.
A full-length version of the interview is set to air on Nightline on Tuesday, April 7, at 12:35 a.m. ET on ABC and streaming on Hulu. Grab the popcorn â or maybe just a box of tissues.
