  • Melissa Gilbert appeared on Good Morning America alongside Busfield’s civil attorney, Larry Stein, for her first sit-down interview about the four counts of criminal sexual contact with a minor charges against her husband, Timothy Busfield.
  • Gilbert stated she is “100 percent” confident Busfield will be exonerated, while also acknowledging “there is a practical side to this and we have to be prepared for all scenarios.”
  • Busfield, who pleaded not guilty to all four counts, faces a trial tentatively set for May 2027 in New Mexico.

Melissa Gilbert has officially broken her silence, and she came out swinging — with love, resolve, and a very clear message.

The actress sat down exclusively with Good Morning America anchor George Stephanopoulos on Monday (April 6, 2026), appearing alongside Busfield’s civil attorney Larry Stein to directly address her husband Timothy Busfield‘s charges of criminal sexual contact with a minor for the very first time.

The verdict from Gilbert? Her husband is innocent, full stop.

“I am 100 percent he will be exonerated,” she told Stephanopoulos, adding carefully, “but I will tell you that there is a practical side to this and we have to be prepared for all scenarios.”

That’s the kind of steely pragmatism you’d expect from someone who’s had to sit with this for months.

Gilbert noted that she “wasn’t capable” of speaking out sooner — Busfield turned himself over to police in January, and was officially indicted in February — because “it’s been a very traumatic time.” She said she finally stepped forward because there’s been too much “untruth” surrounding the scandal.

She didn’t hold back when describing the toll the ordeal has taken.

“Hell,” Gilbert said flatly when asked what the whole episode has been like. “Our life as we knew it is done. We are grieving what we had — all of our plans, all of our dreams, all of our ideas, all of our projects. For Tim, it’s done. He’s canceled. Even if he’s exonerated, he will always be that guy.”

That last line hits differently. She’s not just defending her husband — she’s eulogizing the life they had before the charges landed.

She added, “And believe me, if I thought for a second that Tim Busfield hurt a child, he’d have a lot more to worry about than prison.” Gilbert — best known for playing Laura Ingalls Wilder on Little House on the Prairie — clearly wanted everyone to understand that her support isn’t blind loyalty. It’s bone-deep certainty.

“I know this man in my bones. No one knows him better than I do,” she said. “He is nothing if not completely honest with me. I trust him with my children’s lives, with my grandchildren’s lives, my nieces and nephews. He is an honorable, caring, generous human being.”

So, what exactly are the charges? The allegations against Busfield stem from accusations that he inappropriately touched a child actor on the set of the TV show The Cleaning Lady, which he was directing and which was filmed in Albuquerque, according to a criminal complaint filed in January 2026.

Busfield — known for his roles as Ethan Weston on thirtysomething and Danny Concannon on The West Wing — was indicted on February 6 by a grand jury in New Mexico on four counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor, and later pleaded not guilty to all four counts.

The defense’s central argument hinges on what the boys actually said — and when.

Attorney Larry Stein discussed discrepancies between what he says the boys originally told investigators and what was later described in the complaint. “What the boys said originally was, ‘He never touched me,'” Stein explained. He added that when specifically asked whether Busfield ever touched them inappropriately, “the boys said no.”

Stephanopoulos pressed back, pointing out that in a subsequent interview, one of the boys did allege inappropriate touching. Busfield’s legal team has alleged that the parents of the twin child actors blamed him when their sons were recast and “wanted revenge.”

According to court documents, a witness heard the boys’ mother say that “if her children were not brought back, she would get Timothy Busfield.” The district attorney’s office, for its part, issued a statement saying its focus “remains on the victims.”

Gilbert also addressed questions about past allegations that have surfaced online regarding Busfield. She acknowledged being aware of them when they got together and was deliberate in her response.

“I didn’t go into my relationship with him blind. I am neither naive, nor am I complicit,” she said. “I talked to him about it. I asked him questions about it. I heard his side of the story, which no one has ever heard, which is the truth, and when the time is right — and that is not now — Tim will tell the truth of all of these past allegations when he needs to.”

Busfield’s trial is currently set for May 2027 in New Mexico. For Gilbert, that’s a long time to wait — and she knows it. She said she hopes for both an apology and an exoneration.

A full-length version of the interview is set to air on Nightline on Tuesday, April 7, at 12:35 a.m. ET on ABC and streaming on Hulu. Grab the popcorn — or maybe just a box of tissues.
