Heated Rivalry‘s breakout star Connor Storrie made a surprise return to Studio 8H on Saturday night — this time, not as a host, but as the guy tasked with introducing one of pop’s biggest stars.
The 26-year-old, clad in a denim-on-denim ensemble, was met with cheers from the audience as he introduced Olivia Rodrigo‘s new track “begged” during the May 2 episode of SNL. The moment was a full-circle one: Storrie was just at Studio 8H in Rodrigo’s shoes earlier this year, for his inaugural hosting stint back in late February.
Rodrigo performed the song seated on a swing, a visual that mirrors the cover art for the new album, which features her upside-down on a swing. The imagery was intentional and striking.
The ballad hit hard right out of the gate. “All that I want is to know undoubtedly that you just have eyes for me,” Rodrigo sang. “All that I want is to sit here silently and watch movies on TV.”
The performance featured Weyes Blood on backing vocals, adding an eerie, celestial texture to the already mournful track.
Earlier in the night, rock legend Debbie Harry of Blondie introduced Rodrigo’s energetic performance of “drop dead,” the lead single from You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, which was released April 17. The track has already become her fourth No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Though Rodrigo has been a musical guest twice prior, tonight marked her first time leading the Lorne Michaels-created sketch show.
Both “drop dead” and “begged” are off her third studio album, due June 12. After that, Rodrigo will embark on The Unraveled Tour, a 60-plus-date run of arena shows across North America, Europe, and the UK.
