The 31st Critics Choice Awards kicked off the 2026 awards season Sunday night with Paul Thomas Anderson‘s One Battle After Another claiming Best Picture, signaling a strong start for the political thriller in Hollywood’s most competitive race.
Anderson, who also took home awards for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay, accepted the honor at the ceremony at Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar. “This is really fantastic, fantastic news. We’ll take it,” said Anderson, 55, onstage. “A lot of great films. It’s great to be in this room. It’s great to be a part of all of this. It’s great to have this cast behind me.”
The director reflected on the collaborative process behind his latest work. “I’d say this is the best time I ever had making a movie, and I feel like it shows. It’s just a testament to being with people that you love. Because as somebody said earlier, this is fine and this is fun, but it really is about the people that you work with.”
Timothée Chalamet Makes Emotional Acceptance
Among the night’s standout moments, Timothée Chalamet captured the Best Actor trophy for his performance in Marty Supreme. The 30-year-old actor used his acceptance speech to publicly declare his feelings for girlfriend Kylie Jenner. “Thank you to my partner for three years. I love you. I couldn’t do this without you,” he said when accepting the best actor trophy. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
When the camera cut to Jenner, she mouthed “I love you” in response. The actor also addressed his director, Josh Safdie, saying, “Josh, you made a story about a flawed man with a relatable dream, you didn’t preach to the audience about what’s right and wrong, and I think we should all be telling stories like that. So thank you for this dream.”
‘Hamnet’ Star Jessie Buckley Celebrates Win
Jessie Buckley won Best Actress for her portrayal of Agnes in Hamnet. During her acceptance speech, Buckley gushed over co-star Paul Mescal, saying: “I bloody love you, man. I know loads of other women do too, but tough s**t. I could drink you like water, working with you every single day. You are a giant of the heart. Thank you so much for making me a little bit more human.”
‘Sinners’ and ‘Frankenstein’ Rack Up Multiple Wins
The night saw several films collecting multiple honors. Ryan Coogler‘s Sinners led all winners with four awards, including Best Original Screenplay, Best Score, Best Casting and Ensemble, and Best Young Actor or Actress for Miles Caton.
Netflix’s Frankenstein also claimed four trophies, taking home Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Hair and Makeup, and Best Supporting Actor for Jacob Elordi‘s portrayal of the Creature.
Television Winners Announced
The Critics Choice Awards celebrated television excellence alongside film achievements. Apple TV’s The Studio won Best Comedy Series, with Seth Rogen and Ike Barinholtz earning acting honors. Jean Smart continued her winning streak, taking Best Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks.
Netflix’s Adolescence dominated the limited series categories with four wins total. Stephen Graham won Best Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television, while Owen Cooper and Erin Doherty took supporting acting honors. The series also claimed the Best Limited Series trophy.
Sarah Snook won Best Actress in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television for Peacock’s All Her Fault. ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! was named Best Talk Show.
Chelsea Handler returned to host the ceremony for the fourth consecutive year. The Critics Choice Association expanded its awards this year, adding four new categories: Best Casting and Ensemble, Best Variety Series, Best Stunt Design, and Best Sound.
