Ellen DeGeneres pokes fun at her career transition in the trailer for her upcoming stand-up special, which she's releasing on — hold on, scratch that — it's actually premiering on Netflix, the world's biggest streaming platform, on September 24.

The preview for Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval shows DeGeneres catching viewers up on her life since her popular daytime talk show ended in 2022 amid claims of a toxic work environment. She jokes about taking up gardening and raising chickens before touching on the bumpy end of her TV career.

“The Be Kind Girl wasn't kind — that was the headline,” DeGeneres says. “Here's the problem, I'm a comedian who got a talk show, and I ended the show every day by saying, ‘Be kind to one another.' Had I ended my show by saying, ‘Go fuck yourselves,' people would've been pleasantly surprised to find out I'm kind.”

DeGeneres has mentioned that For Your Approval will be her final stand-up special. In April, she began testing new material with small LA audiences, followed by a tour with some summer date cancellations.

This special marks DeGeneres' first major project since The Ellen DeGeneres Show wrapped up in May 2022. While the show had a successful 19-season run, its final years were clouded by controversy and staff allegations of racism, sexual misconduct, and intimidation by executive producers.

Reports from DeGeneres' recent tour suggest she addresses being “demanding and impatient and tough” in the special. However, she maintains: “I am many things, but I am not mean,” arguing that meanness requires malicious intent.

DeGeneres seems ready to share her side of the story with honesty and humor as she steps back into the spotlight. For fans of pop culture and comedy, this special offers a chance to see a familiar face in a new light, reflecting on recent challenges and the complexities of public perception.
