Ellen DeGeneres announced she is ending her talk show. The comedian told the Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday (May. 11, 2021) that she will end the long-running The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2022.

“When you’re a creative person, you constantly need to be challenged – and as great as this show is, and as fun as it is, it’s just not a challenge anymore,” she told the outlet.

DeGeneres said she informed staff of the decision on May 11 and will sit down with Oprah Winfrey to discuss her show ending on her May 13 show.

The Daily Mail was first to report the news that DeGeneres would be ending her talk show in 2022, with a source telling the website, “She’s promised one more season after this one and will exit at the end of the 2021/2022 season – the 19th season of the show. The ratings have tanked and have been truly appalling this year and Ellen knows her time is up.”

The end date development comes in the wake of a tumultuous year for DeGeneres and her talk show, the latter of which was mired in a behind-the-scenes controversy involving widespread accusations of a toxic workplace.

Last fall, DeGeneres acknowledged the scandal in the show’s Season 18 premiere.
