Harry Styles wants you to know his nightly shower is not just about the sweat.
The pop star sat down with W Magazine ahead of his 30-night Madison Square Garden residency, and instead of talking setlists, he wanted to talk about scrubbing off godhood. Because apparently that’s the vibe now.
“When I come offstage, the first thing I do is shower, because it’s better for me to feel like I washed it off,” Styles said, explaining his private post-concert ritual.
Sure, Harry. Very normal. Very “just a guy taking a shower.”
Except it’s not just a shower. It’s a whole spiritual reset. “There’s a version [of yourself] where you come offstage and feel like, ‘Oh, I’m the guy right now,'” he explained, tracing the feeling back to his earliest days in the spotlight.
Translation: fame gives you a god complex, and Harry showers his off nightly like it’s cheap cologne.
He gets almost uncomfortably poetic about the whole thing. “You do the show, you go backstage, you shower, and all of a sudden you’re naked in this most vulnerable, almost infant-like state of yourself. It couldn’t be more different from what you were doing 10 minutes ago.”
A baby. He’s comparing himself to a baby. In the same interview, he’s on the cover of a magazine ahead of a 30-show stadium residency.
The timing isn’t subtle. This interview dropped one day before his first MSG show of the run, a mini-residency stretching all the way to Halloween, in support of his fourth album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally. So yes, this is a rollout. But the man does seem genuinely spooked by his own audience.
“New York operates at a higher frequency than I do,” he admitted, of the city that’s about to swallow his October whole.
Then there’s the bigger question looming over all of this: why did he vanish after Love On Tour wrapped in 2023 in the first place? Turns out it wasn’t a vacation. It was damage control on his own psyche.
“A big part of the break was about recalibrating the image of myself that I felt I was accidentally swallowing all the time,” he said, “that was being reflected back at me but that I didn’t want necessarily.”
He went further: “I was a little bit in my head about moving through the world and feeling very aware of how everything was being perceived toward the end of the last tour.”
Standard rock-star burnout language, except he also confessed the break itself was hard to sit with. “I would feel quite uncomfortable with stretches at home,” he said. “I didn’t know what to do with myself sometimes.”
Even his exit from godhood comes with an asterisk. “I’m not going to do this forever,” he said of touring, sounding almost relieved about it.
So here’s Harry Styles: showering off adoration nightly, mid-residency, mid-press run, telling us all he’ll walk away from the arenas someday, while standing directly in the middle of one. The shower isn’t a cleanse. It’s a coping mechanism with better lighting. And 30 nights at the Garden says he’s not walking away from the godlike position quite yet.
