The Greenville County Coroner’s Office confirmed to Variety that the Nashville and Heroes star’s death came down to the toxic effects of fentanyl and other drugs. The full rap sheet: fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine. The manner of death was officially ruled an accident.
Panettiere was 36. She died August 16 in Greenville, South Carolina, found unresponsive by her on-and-off boyfriend Brian Hickerson, who administered Narcan before paramedics arrived. It wasn’t enough. An autopsy turned up no signs of trauma.
TMZ broke the drug-dealer angle weeks before the coroner’s report landed, reporting that Panettiere died after taking oxycodone laced with fentanyl. Sources told the outlet a longtime Los Angeles dealer supplied the pill, and he’s now the target of a DEA investigation working to trace it back to its source.
Her father, Skip Panettiere, broke the news himself in August. “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” he wrote, before asking for privacy as the family grieved.
The actress had been candid about addiction for years, stepping away from Hollywood in 2016 before returning with Scream VI in 2023. Just months before her death, she published a memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, detailing the toll of growing up in the spotlight and her long fight with substance abuse.
Co-stars and friends flooded social media with tributes in the days after. The grief was real; the questions didn’t go away. Now, finally, the coroner has answered the one that mattered most.
