Janet Jackson has not actually apologized for stating Kamala Harris is ‘not black,’ says US election will end in ‘mayhem’

Music legend Janet Jackson recently shared her thoughts on Kamala Harris in an interview with The Guardian.

Jackson mentioned she'd heard people saying Harris “is not Black.” It's a claim that echoes what former President Donald Trump had been saying, questioning Harris's Black heritage.

“She's not Black. That's what I heard — that she's Indian,” Jackson said in the interview. “That's what I was told. I mean, I haven't watched the news in a few days. I was told they discovered her father was white,” she added. The interviewer quickly set the record straight, explaining Harris's mixed heritage.

When asked if America's ready for a woman of color as VP, Jackson was candid: “Honestly, I don't want to answer that because I really, truthfully, don't know. I think either way it goes, there's going to be mayhem.”

It's worth noting that Harris has always embraced her Black identity. She made history as the first Black and Asian American woman to become vice president. Her dad, Donald J Harris, is a Jamaican economist, and her mom, Shyamala Gopalan, was an Indian biomedical scientist.

Trump had previously stirred the pot at a Black journalists' conference, saying, “I did not know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black. I respect either one, but she obviously doesn't, because she was Indian all the way, and then all of a sudden, she became Black.”

And then, here is when things get even more bizarre. Supposedly following the backlash her comments created, her “manager,” Mo Elmasri, told BuzzFeed that the comments were “based on misinformation.”

“She deeply respects Vice President Kamala Harris and her accomplishments as a Black and Indian woman,” the statement continues.

“Janet apologizes for any confusion caused and acknowledges the importance of accurate representation in public discourse.”

However, Variety reports that someone other than the singer's manager made the unusually worded “apology” for the singer.

Janet has been managed by her brother, Randy Jackson, for many years. The siblings are said to be mourning their older brother Tito, who died last Sunday at the age of 70 and is unavailable for comment.

Elmasri did not immediately respond to Variety’s requests for further comment. So, stay tuned!
