Madonna is currently in the midst of a five-night performance series at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California, for her Celebration Tour. However, just under a year ago, she would have been unable to even step onto the stage.
At her concert on Monday (March 4, 2024), the 65-year-old icon disclosed that the intense bacterial infection she encountered in June 2023 – which resulted in her hospitalization and the delay of her ongoing tour – temporarily hindered her mobility. She addressed the audience, clutching a cowboy hat and a guitar, and shared, “I had an unexpected incident this summer. It was a close call with death.”
The experience was quite frightening. During the four days that I was in an induced coma, I was unaware. However, upon awakening, my first word was a firm “No.” It felt as though God was offering me a choice, asking, “Do you want to come with us? Do you want to follow this path?” And my response was a resounding “No.”
The “Express Yourself” songstress expressed gratitude to her doctor, who was present in the crowd and had suggested that she spend time outdoors to absorb vitamin D during her recuperation from her health scare. Recollecting the experience, she shared how challenging it was for her to simply walk from her home to the backyard and bask in the sunlight. Although it may seem irrational, it was a struggle for her.
The seven-time Grammy winner stated that they were uncertain about when they would be able to stand back up and return to their true self. They also shared that it was an unusual experience to no longer have a sense of control, which taught them the importance of letting go.
After postponing her career-spanning journey during the summer, Madonna commenced her Celebration Tour at London's O2 Arena in October. The tour will continue until April 26, with the final show taking place at Palacio De Los Deportes in Mexico City after a six-month run.
During a prior performance, the Pop monarch shared that her six offspring played a crucial role in helping her overcome her sickness. She humorously quipped to her audience in Brooklyn in December that she had to come close to death to gather all her children in one place.
As she continued, she mentioned, “I couldn't help but consider the possibility of abandoning my children. The thought of leaving them at this crucial point in their lives would devastate me. In that moment, my thoughts were solely focused on them and also on how frightened my mother must have been, knowing she would have to leave us all behind.”
Madonna discussed her health scare during her live performance at the Forum in Los Angeles, acknowledging her devoted fan base and her ongoing celebration tour.
