Drew Barrymore‘s touchy-feely interview style caused another awkward moment on Tuesday's episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, this time with guest Martha Stewart.

As Barrymore stroked Stewart's back, the homemaking icon gently pushed her away. Barrymore playfully fell back onto the couch as Stewart quipped, “You're the wrong gender.”

Stewart was there to promote her 100th cookbook. When Barrymore asked what makes Stewart feel “soft and gooey inside,” she replied that “soft and gooey treatment” does the trick.

Barrymore mused, “Being treated like a lady,” and started petting Stewart's back again. “Someone comes in and…” Barrymore began before Stewart nudged her away.

After Stewart hinted she'd prefer that treatment from a man, Barrymore joked, “I know. Although the way it's going with men though, Martha, I'm not so sure anymore.”

This interaction adds to the online chatter about Barrymore's intimate interviewing approach. She addressed the issue during the show's September premiere, following a similar incident with Oprah Winfrey.

“It's so funny because consistently over the last five years, it's that I'm too touchy and too close to people, which is so embarrassing,” Barrymore admitted then. She told viewers, “I don't know if I can break the habit,” but “I hear you and I'll do my best.”

Stewart has previously opened up about her struggles with affection. In her Netflix documentary Martha, she discusses her discomfort with expressing emotions, linking it to her upbringing: “There was not a lot of ‘affection' in our house.”

Recently, Stewart's ex-husband Andy Stewart, to whom she was married for 29 years, accused her of being “abusive” during their marriage.

As we reflect on these moments, it's clear that navigating personal boundaries on camera can be challenging. While Barrymore's warmth is part of her charm, finding the right balance is an ongoing process. It's a reminder that even beloved public figures are on a journey of growth and self-awareness.
