Nicki Minaj has found a new revenue stream, and it’s coming straight from her timeline.
The rapper announced over the weekend that fans can now pay $10 a month to subscribe to her X account, unlocking what she’s calling “exclusive Spaces & content.” For the Barbz, that means digging into their wallets just to keep up with Nicki’s next move online.
“I finally did it,” Minaj wrote in the announcement, posted alongside an image of a smiling doll in a bright pink wig. “You can now subscribe to my X account. It’s for ppl who wanna have fun, think deeper, grow, learn, laugh, cry, cuss ppl out, look cute sometimes, be yourself at all times… elevate, levitate, meditate.”
She capped it off with a flourish: “Exclusive Spaces & Content 🎀 Welcome Aboard 🔑.”
The subscription tier, part of X’s Creator Subscriptions program, gives paying fans access to subscriber-only posts, private Spaces and a special badge that shows up whenever they interact with Nicki’s account. According to AllHipHop, the rollout already has roughly 1,100 paying members, which pencils out to about 11,000 a month, or close to 132,000 a year, before X takes its cut.
Not everyone in the comments was ready to “subscribe.”
“What happened to billionaire Barbie? Why are we begging for subscriptions on Twitter?” one user asked. Another wasn’t buying the branding at all: “If you’re broke why don’t you just say that.”
The timing hasn’t helped the narrative. Minaj is currently tangled in a legal fight with a concert production company that claims she owes roughly 275,000, a claim she has denied, saying she wasn’t personally involved in the contract.
She’s also facing a separate suit from a law firm over an alleged 230,000 in unpaid legal fees. So when the pay-to-read posts landed, some fans connected the dots on their own.
“C’mon barbz subscribe to her she needa pay dem lawsuits she lost,” one commenter wrote. Another piled on: “I knew you were broke after all this, but to the point of asking for money on Twitter, girl, you’re ruined asf.”
Nicki hasn’t addressed the money chatter directly, and there’s no confirmation the subscriptions have anything to do with her legal bills. Plenty of creators use X’s paywall tools without a financial crisis in sight.
Not every reply was hostile. Some fans said they were simply here for it. “Can’t wait for all the exclusive content,” one wrote, while Nicki herself seemed to be having fun with the whole rollout, teasing subscribers with “secret content” and joking, “It’s kind of fun being able to just annoy them whenever I want.”
Whether the Barbz keep swiping their cards each month remains to be seen. For now, Nicki Minaj has officially turned her tweets into a toll road.
