It’s only August, but it’s never too early to think about the most festive holiday of the year –we’re talking, of course, about Christmas. For Drag Race fans, a growing holiday tradition is the nationwide A Drag Queen Christmas tour. For the 10th year, Murray & Peter are bringing some of your favorite slay belles to a city (hopefully) near you to ring in the season. The tour kicks off on November 13 in Detroit and wraps up on December 29 in Miami Beach.
The tour includes holiday-themed performances from Sasha Colby, winner of Drag Race Season 15, Sapphira Cristal, season 16 runner-up, Roxxxy Andrews, All Stars season nine winner Angeria Paris VanMichaels, Plane Jane, Crystal Methyd, Plasma, Lady Camden and Brooke Lynn Hytes.
When you’re looking for the perfect host to share all things Christmas with audiences across the country, you need look no further than Nina West. Nina has been with the tour since its inception, having been approached by Murray & Peter after her memorable run on season 11 (where, as you will recall, she earned the well-deserved title of Miss Congeniality.) Nina told us that she’s excited to be hosting the tour once again and knows audiences will be blown away with the amount of talent on display in every show.
Nina is no stranger to the holiday, as her Christmas EP, The West Christmas Ever, is celebrating its 5-year anniversary. On that EP, Nina sang a song inspired by John Waters’ classic film Female Trouble, “Cha Cha Heels” and the accompanying video saw Nina inhabit some of the director’s most memorable characters, including Kathleen Turner’s Serial Mom, Divine’s Dawn Davenport (from Female Trouble) and Hairspray’s protagonist Tracy Turnblad. And…a few years later, Nina toured with the national company of Hairspray the musical playing matriarch Edna Turnblad in a fantastic performance.
We spoke with Nina about the tour and when asked what she loved about touring, she said she loves seeing the festive decorations (and even ice rinks) around the venues the tour is visiting. Despite the day-to-day rigors of touring, she loves having the chance to bring the show and the joy of the holidays across the country. She’s also excited to show off the holiday spirit in her hometown of Columbus, Ohio to her fellow queens.
And, in addition to the fierce and festive performances from the likes of Jimbo and Sasha, Nina will be performing a brand-new Christmas song in advance of a full-length Christmas album that she hopes to release in 2025. When asked if she could choose her love of Christmas over her love for Disney, she said she couldn’t make that choice – but told us the only thing she collected were Disney Christmas ornaments!
Even though Christmas is months away, Nina’s holiday wish is for Santa to spread a little fairy dust and encourage everyone to register to vote and go to the polls come November. As for her own wish, she’s hoping to make it to Broadway. When asked what her dream role would be, she said she’d love to bring Edna to the Great White Way to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Hairspray. Other roes she’d like to play range from King George to the dentist in Little Shop of Horrors or Annie’s villainous Miss Hannigan.
In between getting ready for the tour and her run on season nine of All Stars, this busy queen managed to drop a brand-new EP, The Very Queen, featuring the lead single of the same name offering a delightful parody of the Gilbert and Sullivan classic “Modern Major General.” Anointed as “The Keeper of The Drag Race Chronographical,” Nina hilariously and impressively names every single queen who has sashayed into the workroom during the regular US seasons 1 through 16 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. The EP also features her talent show extravaganza song “It’s Giving (Drag is for Everyone)” and two songs she recorded during the pandemic, “You Are the Dream” and “The Princess Song” – both of which are inspired by Nina’s love of all things Disney.
Although she may not have snatched the crown on All Stars 9, she’s on a continuing mission to make the world a kinder place while raising funds for her charity of choice, LGBTQIA+ youth charity The Trevor Project. Teaming up with Ohio-based clothier HOMAGE, Nina recently launched the HOMAGE X Nina West “Go Big. Be Kind. Go West” tee. 20% of each sale will benefit The Trevor Project, the leading suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQIA+ youth.
Nina shared, “When I was discovering who I was, I felt so isolated and alone, it was the darkest and scariest time in my life, thinking that there was no one in the world who would understand or love me. That’s why I chose The Trevor Project as my charity of choice. I never want our LGBTQIA+ youth to feel alone… I want them to know they will have the opportunity to grow up and chase their dreams. Trevor helps affirm that message and bring our kids hope.”
