A new film about Hulk Hogan called Killing Gawker, is now under development. Hogan, renowned for his wrestling prowess, has also become a pop culture icon. In 2013, Hogan filed a lawsuit against Gawker Media after the company's staff shared segments of an intimate video featuring him and Heather Clem.
The case concluded in 2016 with Hogan securing a $140 million verdict against the media group. According to Variety, Killing Gawker is now in development based on these events. Artists Equity, the production company founded by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, will produce the film.
The wildest rumor surrounding the movie is that Affleck would be playing Hogan.
Charles Randolph penned the screenplay, which draws inspiration from Ryan Holiday‘s book Conspiracy: Peter Thiel, Hulk Hogan, Gawker and the Anatomy of Intrigue. Gus Van Sant will direct the project.
Affleck, Damon, and Van Sant share a history of collaboration. The trio previously joined forces on Good Will Hunting, which Van Sant directed in 1997. Since then, he hasn't worked with Damon and Affleck as a pair, his more recent titles including Feud, When We Rise, and The Sea of Trees. However, Van Sant did team up with Damon again for Promised Land in 2012. Affleck and Damon clinched Oscars for their Good Will Hunting screenplay, while Van Sant received a nomination for his direction.
Killing Gawker presents an exciting opportunity for Affleck and Damon to further their work with Artists Equity, their production company launched in 2022. Under this banner, the pair produced Air in 2023, a film in which they both starred.
From Good Will Hunting to appearing as extras in Field of Dreams and beyond, Affleck and Damon have a long-standing partnership. Artists Equity is just one of many avenues through which the duo continues their collaboration, with Killing Gawker set to be their next joint venture.
Apart from details about the director and producers, little is known about the film's specifics. Affleck is rumored to be taking on the role of Hogan, but no official casting announcements have been made. Given that both he and Damon acted in Air, it's probable they'll star in Killing Gawker as well, especially considering their A-list status would be a major draw for audiences.
