Gene Hackman and wife Betsy Arakawaโs bodies showed no indication of โexternal trauma.โ
The pair were discovered lifeless in their New Mexico residence on Wednesday and were subsequently โtransported to the Office of the Medical Investigator,โ according to a news release from the Santa Fe County Sheriffโs Office.
โAn autopsy was performed,โ the statement, obtained by The Independent Thursday (Feb. 27, 2025), continued. โInitial findings noted no external trauma to either individual.โ
The release mentioned that โthis remains an open investigationโ while official autopsy and toxicology results are pending.
Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed there werenโt any โapparent signs of foul playโ though he characterized the deaths as โunusual.โ

A pet dog belonging to Hackman and Arakawa was also discovered deceased in the residence, with two other dogs surviving โ one inside and another outside the property.
Arakawa and the deceased canine were discovered in a bathroom where โpills scatteredโ were found nearby.
The piano virtuoso had apparently been deceased โfor some timeโ with her remains showing indications of โmummification.โ
Hackman was โlocated in a separate room of the residence.โ
Though the actorโs relatives initially thought carbon monoxide might be responsible, according to TMZ, a search warrant accessed by the outlet indicated there were โno obvious signs of a gas leak.โ

The acclaimed 95-year-old โFrench Connectionโ performer and his companion, who married in 1991, were found by a maintenance worker.
In the workerโs recorded 911 call, he emotionally stated, โDude, theyโre not moving! Just send somebody out here real quick.โ
Hackman leaves behind three children from his previous marriage to late ex-wife Faye Maltese โ Christopher, 65, Elizabeth, 63, and Leslie, 58.
Leslie told Daily Mail Thursday that her father โwas in very good physical conditionโ and in โgood health.โ
Though due to Hackmanโs advanced age, she wasnโt โterribly shock[ed]โ by his death.
