The enigmatic gay country sensation Orville Peck is about to reveal his face to the public for the first time in his professional career.
The masked singer is set to join the prestigious ranks of Eddie Redmayne by taking on the role of the Emcee in the acclaimed Broadway production of Cabaret starting March 31. The role, which Adam Lambert has also portrayed since the showโs U.S. transfer, will require Peck to perform without his trademark leather face covering.
In what appears to be a calculated move to prepare his fanbase for this unmasked era, Peck has been gradually building anticipation through media appearances. Now, heโs released an official teaser video giving audiences their first authorized peek at his face.
The newly released Instagram teaser shows Peck making sultry eye contact with viewers through a diminutive mask before dramatically removing and discarding it. The caption reads: โOrville Peck is Emcee from March 31. Do you feel good?โ
Speaking to The New York Times about performing maskless, Peck shared: โThe mask is part of my expression personally as an artist and a very big personal part of me. But Iโm here to play this role and to bring respect and integrity and hopefully a good performance to it. Itโs not about me. Iโm not trying to make it the Orville Peck show.โ
โI wouldnโt have necessarily done this for just anything,โ he continued. โBut this is probably my favorite musical of all time.โ
Dedicated followers of Peck might recall that while this marks his first professional unmasked appearance since achieving mainstream success, the artist previously appeared fully exposed โ both facially and physically โ in an explicit photoshoot for Butt magazine. These images were captured before the South African performer, whose real name is Daniel Pitout, established himself as the musical persona Orville Peck.
โThe irony is that if I put my mask on, Iโm suddenly not anonymous anymoreโ
While these provocative photographs have largely disappeared from mainstream internet platforms, determined searchers can still uncover them in the digital depths.
