The Gentlemen star sat down with Town & Country ahead of his Netflix crime drama’s season two drop and got asked the question every royal reporter has been dying to plant: is Meghan Markle actually joining the cast for season three? His answer wasn’t subtle.
“No, I think that was mainly a lot of hot air,” James said, dismissing weeks of breathless casting speculation in a single line.
He couldn’t resist a joke first, though. Asked about “a certain ex-royal” potentially sharing the screen with him, James deadpanned that Sarah Ferguson was actually the one signing on, and that she’d be playing his love interest.

Then, days later at the actual season two premiere in London, James doubled down for the Press Association, and got even more blunt. He called the Meghan chatter spurious, allowed that she’d theoretically fit the show’s aristocratic world since she’s technically part of a royal family herself, then shut the door anyway. “The practicalities of that are impossible,” he said.

James wasn’t alone on the carpet fielding the question, either. Ray Winstone joked he isn’t even sure he’s coming back for season three himself. Vinnie Jones waved the whole saga off with the exact same two-word verdict as his co-star.
Hugh Bonneville, arriving fresh off Downton Abbey duty to play a new aristocrat, called the entire rumor a savvy piece of stunt marketing, then pitched Nigel Farage as a cast addition completely unprompted. Truly nobody asked, Hugh.
Here’s what makes this juicier than a standard casting denial: the rumor didn’t come from nowhere. Deadline first reported Markle was in early talks for season three right as she and Prince Harry made their surprise move back to the UK.
And when a Netflix UK executive got cornered about it on a festival panel, she didn’t kill the story. She left it dangling instead, refusing to rule anything out.
That’s not a denial. That’s a tease dressed up as a shrug.
It’s also worth remembering Markle has flip-flopped on this exact question before. Back in 2022, she told Variety her acting comeback intentions boiled down to four blunt words: “absolutely not.”
Four years later, reports suggest she and Harry were quietly discussing an acting comeback even before The Gentlemen came calling.
So take Theo James’s hot air line with a grain of salt the size of Windsor Castle. Actors deny casting news right up until the ink dries.
