Last week, the pair, along with Misha Collins, revealed in a heartfelt Twitter video that the cult fave would come to an end next year. In the days that followed, the gang flooded social media with sentimental posts that had us up in our feelings, including Padalecki’s adorable wrap photo, Ackles’ promise for a “BIG!!! REAL BIG!!!” final season and Collins’ heartfelt open letter to the SPNFamily.

During a fan convention in Las Vegas over the weekend, Padalecki and Ackles explained the thought process behind the decision to hang up their demon-hunting boots for good.

In response to a fan question about whether or not they made a deal with a crossroads demon to extend Supernatural a decade beyond creator Eric Kripke‘s original five-year plan, Padalecki said, “We wanted to communicate to you guys this was a community decision.

The network and the studio did not say, ‘Hey, guys, get outta here! You’re done.'”

Ackles then spelled out just how hard it was to let go of the series after 15 years.

“It wasn’t an easy decision. It was months and months, if not years, of discussion between he [Padalecki] and I, between the rest of the cast, between the crew, between our writers, between our producers, between the studio, between the network.

Nobody wanted to see this show fizzle out.”

“I think that it was everyone wanting to do the biggest service to the show that we could by going out strong. It just seemed like the writing was kind of on the wall as to when that was happening. Everybody kind of felt that it was coming soon, and so it was just taking that leap of faith of going like, ‘Well guys, let’s get out the paint and paint that finish line because what we’ve accomplished is unlike any other.'”
