RuPaul’s Drag Race UK superstar James Lee Williams, professionally known as The Vivienne, has died at age 32. The devastating announcement came via social media today (5 January), through a statement from publicist Simon Jones.
The statement characterized James as “an incredibly loved, warm-hearted, and amazing person” and noted that the family is shattered by the loss of their cherished son, brother, and uncle. They have requested space during this difficult period. The cause of death remains undisclosed.
In a separate statement, Jones expressed: “These are words I never ever wanted to write. Viv was a close friend, a client and someone I loved very much.
“From the moment I met them in 2019 I knew we could create magic together and I became their manager. Their talent was immense and the light they brought to every room was astonishing.
“No one has ever made me laugh in my life as much as Viv did. Their comic genius and quick wit was like no other.
“I’m so proud and lucky that Viv was such a big part of my life every day for the last 5 years.
“It’s tragic that their career was only just beginning. In musical theatre Viv had found a space and career they loved, excelled and thrived in.
“I am heartbroken and devastated at this news. RIP my wonderful friend. You left us way too soon.”
A native of Colwyn Bay, Wales, born in 1992, The Vivienne captured hearts as the champion of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK‘s inaugural season in 2019. They swiftly became a cultural phenomenon, acclaimed for their razor-sharp humor, magnetic presence, and masterful impressions, notably their viral Donald Trump portrayal.
The Vivienne’s talents extended beyond drag artistry. In 2022, they launched their first EP Bitch on Heels and took on the iconic role of the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz. They returned to this role in London’s West End in 2023.
Their recent accomplishments included competing on RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars season seven in 2022 and captivating viewers on Dancing on Ice in 2023.
