If you thought you’d seen the last of the “Crank That” dance in 2007, think again. Timothée Chalamet just single-handedly revived the Soulja Boy classic, and he did it in the most unexpected place—on stage at CCXP in São Paulo, Brazil. The 29-year-old actor was in town this past Friday to promote his upcoming A24 film, Marty Supreme, but he ended up giving fans a performance that had absolutely nothing to do with ping pong and everything to do with early internet culture.
Sporting a green and yellow pullover in a nod to his Brazilian hosts, Chalamet wasted no time hyping up the crowd. As soon as the iconic steel drum intro of Soulja Boy’s “Crank That” hit the speakers, the Dune star launched into the choreography with a level of precision that suggests he’s been practicing in front of a mirror for years. Naturally, the crowd went absolutely wild.

But he didn’t stop there. In a move that felt like a mini-concert, Chalamet peeled off the Brazil-colored pullover to reveal a grey “USA” hoodie, which he promptly tossed into the screaming audience. A moment later, that hoodie was gone too, leaving him in a white tank top as he continued to energize the room.
Speaking to the ecstatic audience, Chalamet connected his dance moves to the themes of his new movie. “What I take from Marty — what I take with me today — is to keep dreaming, keep believing in yourself, don’t fear negative opinions,” he told the crowd. Then, in a moment of pure candor, he added, “If you’ve got the opportunity to come out and do ‘Crank That’ in São Paulo — you know what I’m saying?”
Social media, of course, ate it up. Clips of the dance circulated instantly, with one fan on X (formerly Twitter) commenting, “He hit that way too well.” Another user added, “He’s honestly just living his best life,” while a third summed it up perfectly: “This is so iconic oh my gosh.”

While the dance was the viral highlight, Chalamet and director Josh Safdie were officially there to talk Marty Supreme, which hits theaters on Christmas Day. Chalamet plays a ping pong champion in the film, a role Safdie described as being about “a hardcore dreamer.” Chalamet even quipped to the audience, “If you don’t like good movies, don’t go see Marty Supreme.”
Whether you’re there for the high-stakes ping pong drama or just to see Timothée Chalamet relive the golden era of ringtone rap, it’s clear he knows exactly how to work a crowd.
