Where is there? Living under a dictatorship? If that's what Zachary Levi is looking for, he's found his man.

If celebrity endorsements were to decide the 2024 presidential race, Donald Trump might as well start drafting his farewell speech now. The list of stars backing the Democratic nominee and current VP Kamala Harris reads like an A-list guest list at the Oscars. Meanwhile, Trump's biggest Hollywood supporter so far came forward on Saturday, but even that endorsement felt more like a lukewarm shrug than a ringing endorsement.

Zachary Levi's political views have been overshadowing his acting career for a while now. His apparent doubts about life-saving vaccines, his criticism of the SAG-AFTRA strike, and his vocal support for Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. – a man facing credible sexual assault allegations, among other issues – have all raised eyebrows. Adding to this, his recent portrayal of DC superhero Shazam bombed at the box office, a failure Levi seemed to pin on fellow DC star Dwayne Johnson and the studio's marketing team.

When RFK, Jr. – whom Levi had described as “the best we've had in a long time” – dropped out of the presidential race, the Chuck star found himself at a crossroads. Back in 2020, he had tweeted, “I am no fan or supporter of Trump, and I find his behavior to be vulgar, callous, narcissistic, and lacking empathy.”

But in a world where JD Vance can call Donald Trump “America's Hitler” and then become his potential VP pick, it seems all bets are off. With RFK, Jr. out of the picture, Levi joined an interesting group of Trump supporters including (let me check my notes) Roseanne Barr, Hulk Hogan, and fellow box-office disappointment Jon Voight in backing the convicted fraudster.

However, Levi's endorsement was far from enthusiastic. It came during a Saturday (Sep. 28, 2024) event he was hosting, featuring RFK, Jr and former U.S. rep Tulsi Gabbard, and it felt more like a reluctant admission than a passionate declaration.

The video from the event, part of “Team Trump's Reclaim America Tour” in Dearborn, Michigan, tells the story. Jokingly calling himself “Shazam,” Levi said, “For a long time, I was like, ‘Man, I really want to find a politician that represents all of the things that I want and I want to see in a presidential candidate.' And this year, I found Bobby Kennedy, and I thought, ‘Man, this guy is it. He's the real deal.' And in a perfect world, whatever that would look like, perhaps I would have voted for Bobby.”

“But we don't live in a perfect world,” Levi continued. “In fact, we live in a very broken one, we live in a country that has been hijacked by a lot of people who want to take this place way off the cliff. And we want to stop that, right?”

“We're here to make sure that we are going to take back this country, we are going to make it great again, we are going to make it healthy again,” Levi said from the stage. “And so, I stand with Bobby, and I stand with Tulsi, and I stand with everyone else who is standing with President Trump.”

“Because I do believe, of the two choices that we have, and we only have two, Donald Trump, President Trump is the man that can get us there. And he's gonna get us there because he's gonna have the backing and the support and the wisdom and the knowledge and the fight that exists in Robert Kennedy Jr. and former representative Tulsi Gabbard.”

Levi's entrance was accompanied by Bachman Turner Overdrive's 1973 hit “Takin' Care Of Business.” Yet, for his next appearance, organizers might consider a different classic from that era: Stephen Stills' folk-rock gem, “Love the One You're With.” As Trump's support base shrinks, this song seems to capture the essence of those still speaking up for the former president better than the BTO track or other campaign favorites.
