During her hosting gig on Saturday Night Live on Feb. 03, 2024, Ayo Edebiri took the opportunity to address past comments she made about Jennifer Lopez, who was serving as the episode’s musical guest.

In a game show sketch where Kenan Thompson forced contestants to reckon with their rude social media presences, Edebiri nodded at the recently resurfaced comments, saying, “Okay. We get it. It’s wrong to leave mean comments, or post comments just for clout, or run your mouth on a podcast, and you don’t consider the impact because you’re 24 and stupid. But I think I speak for everyone when I say from now on, we’re going to be a lot more thoughtful about what we post online.”

Previously, Edebiri appeared on “Scam Goddess” in 2020, where she commented about Lopez’s career, suggesting that it was all a scam and that the singer was unaware of critiques. She even commented that Lopez was not singing for most of her songs, and many write-ups about the songs highlighted that fact.

Although Lopez did not appear in any sketches during the episode, she did stand alongside Edebiri in a promotional video, where they expressed their mutual admiration. Despite the previous comments made by Edebiri, she and Lopez seemed to have a friendly relationship and were able to move past any previous negativity. Ultimately, Edebiri’s acknowledgment of her past mistakes and her vow to be more thoughtful about her words online showed growth and maturity.

Edebiri was featured in a 2020 episode of “Scam Goddess,” in which host Laci Mosley said that Lopez’s “whole career is one long scam” and that the singer is unaware of people’s critiques of her.

Edebiri replied: “Well, that’s the thing — she thinks she’s on multiple tracks, but it’s not her. I think she thinks that she’s still good, even though she’s not singing for most of these songs.”

“A lot of the write-ups of the songs will be like, ‘J.Lo didn’t have time to make it to the studio,’” she continued. “Like, ‘J.Lo was busy.’ Doing what? Not singing, obviously.”

Lopez did not appear in any sketches during the episode but did stand alongside Edebiri in a promo released ahead of the episode. “I love your show,” Lopez gushes, and Edebiri responds, “I love your everything.”

Edebri became a little emotional during her opening monologue, not once, but twice. She said, “I am so excited to be here. SNL means so much to me. This really is a dream come true,” Edebiri said, her voice breaking as she became choked up and visibly emotional.

“I was born and raised in Boston, which makes me the first Black woman to ever admit that. Three days into February and I’m already making Black history,” she joked.

Then at the end of her monologue, becoming choked up once more as she described her hosting gig as a “homecoming.”

“Genuinely, I am so excited for tonight. I came up in the New York comedy scene with some of my best friends, who I am so blessed to be working with here tonight, and it really truly feels like a homecoming.”
