Former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle endorsed Kamala Harris‘ presidential campaign on Friday through a brief video showcasing a private phone conversation between the power couple and the current vice president.
“We called to say Michelle and I couldn't be prouder to endorse you and to do everything we can to get you through this election and into the Oval Office,” Obama told Harris. “I am proud of you. This is going to be historic,” the former first lady told Harris.
Speaking into a mobile phone and flashing a few grins, Harris expressed her appreciation for the endorsement and their enduring friendship. “Thank you both. It means so much. And we're gonna have some fun with this too,” Harris said.
The campaign confirmed that the video captured the actual call, not a staged recreation.
Harris's unexpected run against Republican contender Donald Trump continues to gain momentum from backers, contributors, and politicians less than a week after President Joe Biden stepped aside due to declining poll numbers.
Obama, who made history as the first Black U.S. president, remains a beloved figure in the Democratic party even though his last election was over a decade ago.
Obama has supported Biden at high-profile fundraisers, which were among the most successful events of his campaign.
The endorsement could energize and sustain support and fundraising for Harris' campaign and suggests Obama will likely hit the campaign trail for Harris once she becomes the presumptive nominee.
Obama initially held back his endorsement even as Biden, his former right-hand man, named her as his successor. Reports suggest Obama wanted to stay neutral as the party worked out its nominee.
