Paris (AFP) โ€“ Brad Pitt scotched talk of imminent retirement as he travelled to Paris for the premiere of his Jackie Chan-inspired action caper โ€œBullet Trainโ€.ย

The 58-year-old had worried fans that his acting days may be numbered after a GQ interview last month in which he said he was in the โ€œlast semesterโ€ of his career.ย

But Pitt told AFP: โ€œIโ€™m not getting out by any means.

โ€œIt seems that might have been taken as a statement of retirement. Thatโ€™s not what I was saying,โ€ he said.ย

โ€œIโ€™m over that hump of middle age and so Iโ€™m looking at that last legโ€ฆ how do I want to spend that time? At my age, youโ€™ve made enough mistakesโ€ฆ now thereโ€™s a comfort in applying that kind of wisdom.โ€

โ€œBullet Trainโ€, which is being released around the world over the next two weeks, sees Pitt trying something new in an action comedy from the director of โ€œJohn Wickโ€, David Leitch.ย

Pitt plays a reluctant hit-man fighting off rivals on a Japanese train.ย

โ€œItโ€™s ย much more fun than the regular punch-up. Itโ€™s infused with humour and character,โ€ he said.ย

โ€œI canโ€™t say enough about Jackie Chan and what heโ€™s done, and to be in that arena, even close to that, is something I hadnโ€™t done before.โ€ย

Pitt will next be seen in โ€œBabylonโ€ about Hollywoodโ€™s golden age, directed by Damien Chazelle (โ€œLa La Landโ€).ย

That will partner him again with Margot Robbie โ€” the pair starred in Quentin Tarantinoโ€™s โ€œOnce upon a Time in Hollywoodโ€, which won Pitt an Oscar in 2020.ย

But Pitt said he takes particular enjoyment from production duties with his company Plan B.ย

The company has three best picture Oscar winners to its name โ€” โ€œThe Departedโ€, โ€œTwelve Years a Slaveโ€ and โ€œMoonlightโ€ โ€” and will soon release the hotly tipped โ€œBlondeโ€ about Marilyn Monroe.

โ€œI really like what weโ€™ve been able to do on the producing end. You get to be part of stories, foster new talent,โ€ he said.ย

Unlike other major movie stars such as Tom Cruise, Pitt is not as wedded to the nostalgia of movie theatres.ย

โ€œI like the dichotomy, the streamer as well as the theatre experience, because films were getting so expensive to do and to market that it was either big tent-pole movies or very small intimate movies and there was noย room for anythings in-between. Streamers have opened it up for more voices,โ€ he said.ย

Nonetheless, Pitt said he had recently loved going to watch โ€œElvisโ€ in a cinema.ย

โ€œIโ€™m a big fan of Austin Butler, I think heโ€™s going to do great work,โ€ said Pitt of the filmโ€™s star. ย

โ€œIt was so much fun to be there again. Thereโ€™s a place for both.โ€
