Chris Evans seemed to have put away his Captain America shield after his final appearance as Steve Rogers in 2019's Avengers: Endgame. But the charming actor made a surprise return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the 2024 movie lineup, thanks to Shawn Levy‘s Deadpool & Wolverine and the Merc with a Mouth himself, Ryan Reynolds.

If you haven't seen Evans' excellent behind-the-scenes posts from the DP3 set, he stepped back into the fiery role of Johnny Storm, a.k.a. the Human Torch, reprising his character from the Fox-produced Fantastic Four films. Now, he's sharing more about his comeback and that wild monologue he had to deliver, which Reynolds jokingly offered to help with.

The Knives Out actor revealed that Ryan Reynolds extended the invitation to play Storm again a couple of years ago. In an exclusive interview with People, the former Cap actor talked about how Reynolds pitched the reprisal, which allowed him to wear that suit (you know which one). As Evans put it: “I was thrilled to do it.”

And clearly, so were moviegoers, because Deadpool & Wolverine are smashing Marvel's box office records, partly due to Ryan Reynolds's fantastic cameos. But the real cherry on top was a hilarious moment that required Chris Evans to use language that would make Steve Rogers turn red.

In the movie, Wade Wilson causes Johnny Storm's death after telling the villainous Cassandra Nova that the FF member is trash-talking her. Storm insists he is innocent, while Wilson denies making it all up. For those smart enough to stick around through the credits, there is a juicy bonus that proves Wade right.

A recording showed that Chris Evans' Johnny did indeed deliver a side-splitting monologue packed with swear words and risqué humor. Evans shared that Ryan Reynolds jokingly suggested a way to help him deliver the dialogue, which Evans turned down:

“Ryan offered to feed me the lines through an earpiece, but I was like, ‘No, no, I got this.'”

Getting to deliver such spicy lines was a welcome change for the Snowpiercer star, who enjoyed diving back into Johnny Storm's playful character while embracing the R-rated tone of the Deadpool movies. He added:

“I don't get to say dialogue like this. This is not the way Steve Rogers speaks.”

While many fans would have loved to see Chris Evans return as Cap instead of the Human Torch, his comeback as Johnny Storm was a delightful surprise.
