2021 keeps on sucking. After more than a decade on Twitter, Chrissy Teigen has finally reached the limit as to how much abuse she is able to handle on the social media network.
The model, TV personality, author and entrepreneur on Wednesday (Mar. 24, 2021) posted a thread on Twitter, telling her more than 13.7 million followers that she was leaving the platform — before she deleted the account.
“Hey. For over 10 years, you guys have been my world. I honestly owe so much to this world we have created here. I truly consider so many of you my actual friends,” Teigen wrote in the farewell message. “But it’s time for me to say goodbye. This no longer serves me as positively as it serves me negatively, and I think that’s the right time to call something.”
Teigen’s exit from Twitter is a blow to the company, which has tried for years to improve its ability to curb harassment, bullying and other harmful behavior. Trolls had taken a toll on Teigen: “For years I have taken so many small, 2-follower count punches that at this point, I am honestly deeply bruised,” she tweeted Wednesday night.
“This no longer serves me as positively as it serves me negatively, and I think that's the right time to call something,” the wife of John Legend continued. “My life goal is to make people happy. The pain I feel when I don't is too much for me. I've always been portrayed as the strong clap back girl but I'm just not.”
Chrissy continued, “My desire to be liked and fear of pissing people off has made me somebody you didn't sign up for, and a different human than I started out here as! Live well, tweeters. Please know all I ever cared about was you!!!” After reminding people “to know and never forget that your words matter,” she added, “I have made my mistakes, throughout years and in front of hundreds of thousands, and been held accountable for them. I've learned an incredible amount here.”
She continued, “God I have said fucked up shit and killed myself over it as much as you killed me. But one thing I haven't learned is how to block out the negativity… I'm just a sensitive shit, okay!? I don't wanna be this way! I just am! But I love you guys and I cherish our time together, I truly do. I also hate you.” She then concluded her lengthy message with a “<3” and deactivated her account minutes later.
Teigen has updated fans via Instagram after walking away from Twitter on Wednesday.
Thursday on Instagram, Teigen explained, “It’s true! [Twitter] no longer serves me as positively as it does negatively, so with that I bid you adieu. But I want to say that this is absolutely NOT twitter’s fault – I believe they do all they can to combat relentless bullying, any honestly, it’s not the bullying!! You guys have no idea how much they’ve reached out and worked with my team and me personally. It’s not the platform.”
She continued, “It’s not the ‘bullying'. And it’s not the trolls. The trolls I can deal with, although it weighs on you. It’s just me. I have to come to terms with the fact some people aren’t gonna like me. I hate letting people down or upsetting people and I feel like I just did it over and over and over. Someone can’t read that they disappointed you in some way every single day, all day without physically absorbing that energy. I can feel it in my bones.”
The star added, “And to the Q anon people who think I’m in Guantanamo Bay right now, lol. I saw ‘Q: into the storm’ and saw what I’m working with here. And I, lol, I no longer care. Don’t flatter yourselves.”
Her Twitter departure followed the announcement of her partnership with Kris Jenner and the launch of their own line of home cleaning products and self-care items. One critic, in particular, described their collaboration as “tone-deaf.” Another argued, “Their faces are pumped full of the ‘toxins' they're so worried about [and] any greenwashing marketing gibberish is completely offset by their home's carbon footprint and weekend private jet trips to get to Kris's Palm Springs pad.”
Responding to the criticism, Chrissy penned, “I really don't wake up every day trying to make you mad but somehow I manage. and u say I have no talent. that's something I guess.” She also replied the second troll's tweet by stating, “you guys are truly just fucking mean. I'll never get over it.”
And apparently she couldn't.
