An intruder allegedly stormed past security at NBCâs TODAY show studios in Rockefeller Center on Thursday morning (July 16, 2026), lunging at co-anchor Craig Melvin and hurling a racial slur before being taken into custody.
The frightening breach occurred around 9 a.m. as the man (identified as Andrew Truelove) entered a restricted backstage area near the hostsâ dressing rooms, according to multiple reports. He reportedly asked staffers where he could find longtime weatherman Al Roker.
When the man couldnât locate Roker, he turned his attention to Melvin, according to law enforcement sources cited by TMZ, which first broke the story. Thatâs when the confrontation allegedly turned physical, with the man lunging at Melvin while shouting the N-word.

Staff members and security personnel rushed in and subdued the intruder before he could cause any harm. No injuries were reported.
The NYPD confirmed the arrest to multiple outlets, including Page Six, detailing that officers responded to a report of âa disorderly person inside 30 Rockefeller Centerâ at approximately 9:19 a.m. The department noted that âofficers responded and placed an unidentified individual into custody,â adding that the investigation remains ongoing.
Remarkably, Melvin returned to the Today set roughly 15 minutes after the alleged confrontation, appearing alongside Roker as though nothing had happened. Neither host addressed the security lapse on air, and the broadcast proceeded without any visible disruption.

Melvin released a statement (along with one from TODAY) following the incident, writing on Instagram, âHey everyone. Iâve heard from so many of you over the last few hours. Iâm doing just fine. Thanks for reaching out. Iâm looking forward to seeing you tomorrow morning on @todayshowâ
Statement from NBC Newsâ TODAY:
âThere was a security incident this morning at the TODAY show studio. An individual entered an unauthorized area in a vestibule near Studio 1A. The person approached anchor Craig Melvin, who alerted security. The individual was detained and taken into custody by law enforcement without further incident. There was no altercation, and no one was injured. TODAY is cooperating fully with law enforcement as they I investigate the matter. NBC and TODAY take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff and guests extremely seriously. We are reviewing the incident and our security protocols and remain committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who works at and visits our studios.â
Behind the scenes, sources at TODAY indicated the network is taking the breach seriously. TMZâs Harvey Levin, citing insiders at the show, said âheads are going to rollâ over how the man was able to bypass multiple layers of security to reach a restricted area occupied by on-air talent.
Investigators are now combing through surveillance footage to determine exactly how the man slipped past checkpoints designed to keep unauthorized visitors away from the studioâs inner corridors. The man, described by sources as white and unarmed, is said to have entered through a stairwell before making his way backstage.
Security at TODAY was reportedly heightened earlier this year following the abduction of Savannah Guthrieâs mother, Nancy Guthrie, making Thursdayâs breach especially alarming for staff. Notably, the incident occurred on the very same morning Guthrie announced she would temporarily step away from her anchor duties to film a new game show.

Melvin, 47, has anchored Today since 2018 and was elevated to co-anchor alongside Guthrie in January 2025.
As of Thursday afternoon, Truelove remained in NYPD custody at a Midtown Manhattan precinct while authorities continue piecing together how the breach occurred.
