Saturday Night Live cast member Kate McKinnon is heaping praise on Ruth Bader Ginsburg, whom she has famously portrayed on the late-night sketch show over the years, calling the late Supreme Court justice a “real-life superhero.”

“For so many of us,” McKinnon said in a statement obtained by NBC’s Today show late Saturday, “Justice Ginsburg was a real-life superhero: a beacon of hope, a warrior for justice, a robed crusader who saved the day time and again.”

“Playing her on SNL was a profound joy because I could always feel the overwhelming love and gratitude that the audience had for her,” she continued.

McKinnon, who was spotted with the late justice at a production of Fiddler on the Roof last year, also called meeting Ginsburg “one of the great honors” of her life, as well being able to shake her hand and thank “her for her lifetime of service to this country.”

McKinnon joins a growing number of celebrities mourning the death of Ginsburg.
