Kim Kardashian‘s plea for the Menendez brothers’ release has got me thinking. She recently visited Erik and Lyle in prison, and her words paint a different picture than what we’ve heard before.
“I have spent time with Lyle and Erik; they are not monsters,” Kardashian wrote in her NBC News op-ed. It’s a bold statement, considering their life sentences for murdering their parents back in 1989.
What struck me was her mention of a warden’s comment. “One of the wardens told me he would feel comfortable having them as neighbors,” she shared. It’s not often you hear that about convicted murderers.
Kardashian described them as “kind, intelligent and honest men,” highlighting their work with elderly inmates. It’s a side of them we rarely see in the media.

She raised an interesting point about how times have changed. “Had this crime been committed and trialed today, I believe the outcome would have been dramatically different … I also strongly believe that they were denied a fair second trial,” she said, referring to their 1996 sentencing.
Her words about the lack of support for male abuse survivors back then hit home. “Back then, there were limited resources for victims of sexual abuse, particularly for boys. There were virtually no systems in place to support survivors, and public awareness of the trauma of male sexual abuse was minimal, often clouded by preconceived judgments and homophobia,” Kardashian continued. “Can anyone honestly deny that the justice system would have treated the Menendez sisters more leniently?”
It’s a perspective that makes you pause and reflect. She argued that the brothers were “robbed of their childhoods by their parents” and then “robbed of any chance of freedom” by the justice system.

What really caught my attention was the mention of 24 Menendez family members, including Jose and Kitty’s siblings, asking for Erik and Lyle’s release. It’s not often you see that kind of family support in cases like this.
Kardashian’s hope for a reconsideration of their sentences, especially with the 1988 letter from Erik describing abuse, adds another layer to this complex story.
Her final words were powerful: “We owe it to those little boys who lost their childhoods, who never had a chance to be heard, helped or saved.”
With LA District Attorney George Gascón announcing a resentencing hearing for November 29, who knows? This story might take another unexpected turn.
