The 96th Academy Awards race commenced on Tuesday with the announcement of the nominations, which saw Oppenheimer and Poor Things taking the lead with 13 and 11 nominations, respectively. The former is an extensive exploration of the dawn of the Atomic Age, while the latter is a feminist fantasy set in a steampunk world with mutants and male chauvinist pigs.
Killers of the Flower Moon, a crime drama that delves into a massive conspiracy that aimed to rob the Osage Nation of its oil wealth, received ten nominations. Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon address sensitive issues in American history. Recognizing their poignant themes is particularly timely, given the country's current state of political turmoil.
In a surprising turn of events, Barbie, which became last year's most significant box office hit, secured eight nominations despite the film's director, Greta Gerwig, and star and producer, Margot Robbie, being left out. The twin blockbusters, released on the same weekend as Oppenheimer, took the world by storm, with their popularity giving rise to the Barbenheimer meme and encouraging audiences to book double features. The two films collectively grossed over $2 billion worldwide, an impressive feat, especially in light of the pandemic's ongoing impact on movie theaters.
This year’s Oscars — again hosted by Jimmy Kimmel (for a fourth time) — will air Sunday, March 10 at 7/6c on ABC.
