Simon Rex recently shared that he’s been calling a “shipping container” home in Joshua Tree National Park, Southern California, his part-time residence.
The actor, known for Scary Movie 3, explained that he splits his time between Los Angeles and his compact “450-square-foot room” in San Bernardino County, California.
“I go to Joshua Tree when I get annoyed in LA, and then when I get bored out there, I come back, and I go back and forth,” he said on Tuesday’s episode of the Family Trips podcast with Seth and Josh Meyers.

Rex, 50, described his smaller dwelling as “a double shipping container” with many walls replaced by windows, “that are made into one big room and the front of it is all glass.”
“It’s basically like a box in the middle of [nowhere]. It’s off-grid, meaning that there is no infrastructure,” he explained, adding, “It’s a tiny box, all glass on one side.”
The star of Red Rocket clarified that while the home sits on five acres, it feels more “like 50 acres with no one around as far as you could see.”
Rex mentioned using a “water well” and a “septic tank” for water needs, relying on solar power and wifi to maintain some connection with the outside world.

“You learn that you don’t need much, and there’s something sort of zen about that and simplifying everything and not having a lot of clutter, because you don’t need all the stuff,” he shared.
The actor from What I Like About You expressed feeling “alive” in the property, describing the experience as “life-changing.”
“It’s the best thing I could’ve got for myself,” he enthused.

Rex has previously shared glimpses of his unique home on social media, including an interior shot showing a wall-mounted TV, a fireplace, and a disco ball hanging from the ceiling.
When not at his shipping container or LA home, Rex travels around California and nearby western states in a 2001 Volkswagen Winnebago RV.
