Alfonso Cuaron's Roma and Yorgos Lanthimos's The Favourite lead nominations announced today for the 91st Academy Awards, scoring 10 nods each, including for best picture.
With Roma, Netflix has scored its first best-picture nomination, something the streaming giant had dearly sought.
The Best Picture category has eight nominees for 2019. Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book, two movies that have been the subject of controversy and were previously honored with Best Picture trophies at the Golden Globes, are both nominated, as is last year’s biggest Hollywood success story: Black Panther.
The big snubs:
- Bradley Cooper was nominated for best actor for A Star Is Born, but missed out on a nomination for best director.
- Another best director snub for Ryan Coogler for Black Panther.
- Ethan Hawke seemed like a shoo-in for his critically lauded work in First Reformed.
- This one is truly shocking, the Fred Rogers documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor? was a heavy favorite to win best documentary. That won't happen now that it has not been nominated.
- If Beale Street Could Talk did not make the best picture cut, nor did director Barry Jenkins in the best director category.
The big surprises:
Spike Lee earned his first best director nod. Ever. This year he's nominated for BlacKkKlansman.
Black Panther made history being the first superhero film to be nominated for best picture.
Willem Dafoe was nominated for best actor in the little-seen At Eternity’s Gate for his role as Vincent Van Gogh.
