On Monday night (Nov. 27, 2023), Charles Melton, renowned for his role as Reggie Mantle in the CW hit show Riverdale, won his first major acting award, the Outstanding Supporting Performance, at the 2023 Gotham Awards.

This was for his part in Todd Haynes‘ dark comedy May December. His portrayal of Joe was selected over several well-known contenders, including Ryan Gosling, Claire Foy, and Rachel McAdams.

Shocked, he went to the podium to accept the award, saying “Oh wow” into the microphone and then adding “Bradley Cooper, go Birds!” He thanked his co-stars, including Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, along with the director, Haynes, and the other personnel from the movie.

After the news of his success, many people on social media cheered him on and voiced their support for him to win an Oscar. One fan encouraged followers to join the “Charles Melton Oscar campaign.”

Others simply expressed their hope that the 32-year-old would be nominated for the 2024 Oscars.

The Gotham Awards, presented by New York's Gotham Film & Media Institute, started off the 2024 film awards season by giving cinema fans an indication of who might be chosen for the 2024 Oscars.

Last year’s Best Feature Gotham winner, Everything Everywhere All At Once, went on to win the 2022 Oscar for Best Picture.
